Breath, embodiment, and health: A philosophical psychological interpretation on Buddhist breath meditation (ānāpāna-sati)

Breath meditation (Pāli ānāpāna-sati) plays a critical role in current psychotherapeutic interventions due to the Western reception of Buddhist mindfulness practice. This article, primarily based on Buddhist sources, provides a phenomenological interpretation on psychological changes following the practice of breath meditation. Such an indigenous Buddhist psychology of the breath is of crucial importance for Western psychology and psychotherapy. It demonstrates important dimensions on the mind-body-interaction, well-being, and health.
