Trauma, Mirror Neurons, Self Reference and the Mindful Therapist

Empathy is a crucial agent in trauma therapy besides anti dissociation techniques. As the activated trauma state of the patient resonates in the mirror neuron system of the therapist the liveliness of the therapist is mirrored by the patient and can be embodied as a resource state. To stand the simulation of trauma within himself/herself the therapist has to have a clear and strong self reference. Compassion without self reference is detrimental to the therapist’s health. Mindful body oriented meditation techniques may help to cultivate and stabilize a strong self reference state.
